Safari Preferences Extensions. Select, disable all extensions and test. Enable Extensions one by one and test. To uninstall any extension, select it and click the “Uninstall” button. Safari Preferences Search Search engine: Select your preferred search engine. Visit the site you want it to be the Home page. Reset Safari settings The Safari reset is great if your web-browser is hijacked or you have unwanted add-ons or toolbars on your browser, that installed by malicious software. Click Safari menu and choose “Preferences”. It will open the Safari Preferences window. Safari is only updated with iOS updates. As far as I know, there is no background updating, and updates only happen along with iOS updates. Above is a screenshot from the new features of iOS 6 - listed is Safari as one of those updates.
